It's strangely entrancing (and somewhat haunting) seeing old newspaper pictures like this, a window into another world. In the past these articles were confined to scrapbooks, and microfilm. Now with computers we can display the article for the entire world to view, but the only problem with that is if you want to read the article, the print may be too small. However if we were to make the article its actual size so it would be easy to read, it would be bigger than the page.

We get around this problem by displaying the articles in two different ways in the subcategories above - standard thumbnails (which everyone is familiar with) and standard embedding (which social media folks are familiar with) - and we are going to give you a some examples of both formats. Each has its own pros and cons and you can use the one that works best for you.

In the samples below are four articles that were not included in the subcategories above. They are displayed in the standard thumbnail format and are very simple to access. Should you wish to read the article simply click on the thumbnail and they will display in a much larger format. These images are hosted by Abbott's with the permission of Newspapers.com. The advantages of this method is quicker loading pages, simplicity, the articles can be visually enhanced, and the thumbnails are created independantly.

In the sample below are the same four articles displayed using an standard embedding code supplied from newspapers.com. Their is more information in this version (actual date and newspaper name), but the drawback is that if you click on the article to zoom in and read it, newspapers.com will only allow you to do this 5 times before it asks you to sign up for at least a trial version membership. If you are already a member of newspapers.com or ancestry.com you can use that to view zoomed in images. If not after your 5 free views you will only be able to view them as shown below.

The articles in both formats are in chronological order, some are damaged, and not all have pictures, but they are our window into the past.
